The Power of the Titans

“What are you? A man? Or a Titan?” — Kitz Weilman

The Power of the Titans lets Subjects of Ymir transform into intelligent Titans (the Nine Titans). Unlike Pure Titans, Shifters control their form and keep their intelligence. A Pure Titan that gains the power becomes human again.

Debut: 24 October 2022.

Double HP · Human-form recovery · Human-to-Titan transformation · Human-level intelligence · Regeneration

A Shifter must suffer an injury that draws blood with a sharp object while holding a solid goal in mind. The transformation releases a burst of energy (lightning/explosion), forms the Titan body and releases hot steam. The human body rests within the nape of the Titan’s neck — the centre of control.

Sharp objects include the Personal Defense Knife, Rusty Scissors and Needle (see All Items & Features).

When a player becomes a Shifter their health uses a new system:

  • Double HP — health rises to 20 hearts.
  • Regeneration — unlimited Regeneration I.
  • Injured state — below 10 hearts the Shifter is injured: reduced vision, cannot run or jump, and can lose the Titan.
  • Exit injured state — returns to normal at 20 hearts.

Shifters spawn naturally in villages as Subjects of Ymir, with particles above their head indicating which Shifter they carry.

  • Two Shifters cannot spawn too close together.
  • Subjects of Ymir die in one hit.
  • If the carrier dies, the power passes to a baby born after their death.

A mechanic that introduces obtaining the Spinal Fluid:

  1. Collect Hange’s field notes — dropped by killing Titans (book-page sound).
  2. Once all notes are found, unlock the Syringe craft.
  3. Use the Syringe near a Titan’s nape to extract Spinal Fluid.

There are four ways to transfer the power of the Titans:

  1. Villager → Player — become a Pure Titan with the Syringe (Spinal Fluid), then eat the Shifter villager. This clears your inventory and immobilises you while transformed.
  2. Player → Player — the player-host must be injured and bleeding; transform and consume the Shifter. If you already hold a Titan you consume it and keep your first form’s passives.
  3. Eldian → Pure Titan — a Pure Titan that eats a Shifter returns to human form and takes the power.
  4. Player → Pure Titan — an injured player eaten by a Pure Titan transfers the power to it.

The 2.4 “Female Update” reworked much of this system:

  • Titan Powers generalised into two types: Sealed and Awaken.
  • Titan Marks (default duration 60 s, configurable).
  • Titan Mastery — gain hardening over time, transformation cost, chance to transform when biting your hand.
  • 9 Syringe variants that transfer a Shifter’s passives without consuming the Titan.
  • Passives moved to the Titan Profile; human/titan profiles, scream in human form.
